Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

What is EVDO?

EV-DO (Evolution-Data Optimized) is a data transfer technology used for CDMA standard mobile connection networks.

What is 3G?

3G (third generation) is a mobile connection technology of the third generation, it means a range of services which includes both high-speed mobile access to the Internet and radio communication technology which establishes a data transfer channel.

What is connection speed?

The maximum data transfer speed is 3.1 Mbit/s (incoming channel). For outgoing channel, this is 1.8 megabit/s maximum. Maximum speed for data transfer in normal regime (1X) is 153 kbit/s, average actual speed is around 40 kbit/s.

What can influence the speed?

Data transfer speed can depend on several parameters. Overburden of network at peak hours, low quality of signal, local radio interference. Take into account that your browser (Internet Explorer) in a window reflecting the connection process shows the speed in kilobyte per second (kB/s). To count how much this would be in kilobit per second (kbit/s), multiply this figure by 8.

What is coverage zone?

For coverage zone, please click here

In what towns is the service available?

What are the conditions for subscribing?

To subscribe to Internet Connection service, it is necessary to buy a modem that supports EVDO technology and RUIM-card. To subscribe this service, please contact «ALTEL» JSC Service-center or distributors.

Can I use this service in other Kazakhstan towns?

If you buy a modem with connected service from «ALTEL» JSC, you can use it in any town in Kazakhstan provided this service is available in the town (see Connected towns).

How can I check my balance?

Information about phone account balance is available at «Personal Account »page.

What are the settings to connect to the Internet (password, login)?

When you subscribe to this service, you will be issued a password and a login to connect to the Internet.

For further information, please see user’s manual or modem setting manual.

What documents are required to make the contract (subscription application) for this service?

Documents for individuals:
  • Identity card or passport
  • Taxpayer’s Identification Number (PHH)
Documents for legal entities:
  • Copies of legal entity’s foundation document
  • Statistical card
  • Registration certificate
  • Taxpayer’s Identification Number (PHH)
  • Bank details, stamp.

Which data transfer regime shall I set on my modem?

It is necessary to set the modem for the EV-DO Only regime.

I cannot open any page when I connect. What can I do?

Probably, the problem is caused by incorrect setting of TCP/IP protocol. You have to get to TCP/IP protocol settings for THIS connection and to make sure that the following settings are chosen: Main gateway is defined by the service, IP address is defined by the server, DNS server is defined by the server.

You can try to open a page not with its proper address, but with IP address. For example, IP address for Yandex search engine (as at 13.02.2008) is 87.250.251.11. In the browser address line type http://87.250.251.11/ or just 87.250.251.11. If you can access the site, then the problem is caused by DNS settings..

It can be that the Firewall security program settings are not correct on your computer. As a test, you can try to switch them off (switching off is different for every program, and there are many of them). If you confirm that the problem is caused by Firewall, then afterwards you’ll need to switch it on and mark correct settings. If you’re not sure how to do that, ask a specialist.

To check whether the problem is caused by your computer, you can try to connect to the Internet from any other computer, if you have one available.

What are the username and the password?

To connect to the Internet, you will have to use standard account parameters:

Username: Your_phone_number@jet3g.kz
Password: Your pin-code.

Having connected for the first time, we recommend that you change your current password (PIN1) to another one at Personal Accountpage.

Where can I find a driver for my modem?

Drivers and software for modems offered by «ALTEL» JSC are already installed on the modem or provided together.

Why is the speed so low, I see it in a sign next to the clock, it says 115200 bit/s (230400)?

This is not a data transfer speed. This is the speed for port synchronization, which Windows shows after connection.

For CDMA modems connected by Plug-and-play, this parameter is fictitious and does not reflect the actual speed of data transfer.

To check your real data transfer speed, try to download any file from the Internet.

Your browser, in the download window, will show the actual speed in kilobytes per second (kbyte/s).

To count how much this would be in kilobits per second (kbit/s), just multiply this figure by 8. Maximum speed for data transfer is 3.1 Mbit/s (outgoing channel is up to 1.8 Megabit/s).

Maximum speed for data transfer in a normal regime (1X) is 153 kbit/s, average real speed is about 40 kbit/s.

I only check my mailbox, but the traffic is as if I were downloading a movie. Why?

Most likely, you transfer big files by email. Images, text documents, mails with attachments spend a lot of traffic.

For example, an image, depending on its quality, can take from 50 kB to 2-3 megabyte. If you use a mail agent (for example, Outlook Express), then all mails you receive are downloaded to your computer from the mail server. We recommend that you limit large file transfer via mail or check the volume of the traffic you use through your personal account. This will help you control file transfer.

During the day, the speed is very low, but in the evening it increases. What can be the problem?

Data transfer speed can depend on several parameters. Overburden of network at peak hours, low quality of signal, local radio interference. Take into account that your browser (Internet Explorer) in a window reflecting the connection process shows the speed in kilobyte per second (kB/s). To count how much this would be in kilobit per second (kbit/s), multiply this figure by 8. Maximum speed for data transfer is 3.1 Mbit/s (outgoing channel is up to 1.8 Megabit/s).
Maximum speed for data transfer in a normal regime (1X) is 153 kbit/s, average real speed is about 40 kbit/s.

From time to time, I get no coverage. What can be problem?

The problem can be caused by the fact that you’re within the area of unstable radio network coverage. The problem can arise if your equipment is defective or your modem does not receive the radio signal properly. In this case, contact our Contact Center. Also try to get to another place and to connect again. Apart from that, if you touch the modem or cover it with something, connection speed can get low.

Connection is established, but after 5-7 minutes it is broken. Why?

Possible reasons:
  • Your modem is set for mixed regime of data transfer (1Õ + EVDO). In mixed regime, during the session modem can shift from EVDO to 1X which causes disconnection. We recommend that you change data transfer regime in the settings to EVDO only.
  • Disconnection can occur in unstable signal areas (see Cl.19).

I only can load some pages. Why?

Most likely, you have firewall which covers the connection port and this causes that the pages are not displayed.

Pages and files from the Internet load well, but sending emails with big messages or sending photos/files to the sites takes a while and sometimes even fails. Why?

EVDO channel is not symmetrical. Maximum speed of the incoming channel is 3.1 Mbit/s and it’s quite quick, but outgoing channel through which large volumes are transferred rarely, is only up to 1.8 Mbit/s.

What can I do if I forgot my password for the Personal Account and Internet connection.

If you forgot your password for the Personal Account, there’re two ways to restore it.
  1. 1. Restoration process through the Personal Account. To do this, in your Personal Account enter “Password forgotten” section, choose “Send password to email”, introduce your registered phone number and press Next. If you introduce the number correctly, you’ll receive current password at your e-mail that you specified upon registration or first access to the Personal Account. To access your email, you have to connect to the Internet from another computer.
  2. 2. Password can be changed via Call Centre. For identification, you will have to tell to the operator your number, identity card number, Taxpayer’s Identification Number. You are recommended to change the password your have received immediately, via your Personal Account.

When I try to connect, I get the message “Error 678: the remote computer is not responding”. Why?

Most often, this error means you have no funds on your account.

The methods to check your balance are provided above (see “How can I check my balance?”).
