Internet security recommendations

Recommendations regarding Internet security for subscribers who use the Internet connection service based on EVDO technology.

Dear subscribers,
In order to improve security while working on the Internet we recommend you:
  • to use, for data transfer services, user’s (end) equipment and software that complies with the requirements of the certification legislation of the Republic of Kazakhstan;
  • to maintain user’s (end) equipment which is used to access to the Internet in good condition and to follow the rules for this equipment operation;
  • to take measures to protect subscriber’s terminal against malicious software;

To prevent unauthorized use of your personal data, we strongly recommend you to store your login and password for Internet access in a place inaccessible for others and never let anyone else know them, including technical support personnel and specialists of «ALTEL» JSC.
Password created by subscriber must be at least 6 symbols long, including numbers and Latin letters.

You are also recommended to follow the following requirements.

1. Preparation of security measures before Internet connection.

à. The basis for computer security is an updated operating system. If possible, we recommend that you don’t use Microsoft Windows 9x/ME and shift, instead, to Microsoft Windows XP (with update package Service pack 2) or Microsoft Vista, which provide better security and safety.

b. Antivirus software provides its users with a number of tools to protect computer against viruses:
  • Email monitor that checks any letters received in the email box, regarding inadmissible attachments.
  • Internet monitor. It controls various threats that can be received by the computer from Internet sites (HTTP protocol).
  • Resident monitor that automatically checks all launched programs and opened documents on the computer.
  • Antivirus scanner. This module enables to check the whole computer, as well as external drives for viruses.
There is a number of paid and free antivirus programs. The important aspect for them is how rapidly its developers add protection against new viruses, that is why we recommend you to use paid antiviruses with subscription to the updates.
Before connecting to the Internet, it’s recommended to install antivirus software with the latest updates and to scan the computer.

2. Setting of security measures immediately after connection to the Internet

à. Firewall
Unauthorized access protection program is meant to secure your computer against network assaults. This program controls every connection between the user’s computer and other computers in a local network or on the Internet, repels assaults from the Internet designed to capture your packages, identifies and prevents any attempts to get to your computer from outside the network and prevents attempts of malicious software to transfer data from your computer.
Immediately after connecting to the Internet, it is recommended to make sure that the firewall is on.

á. b. It is recommended that you install updates for Microsoft Windows and for the software your use, especially antivirus and other security measures (remember that this counts as an incoming traffic which is charged in accordance with your pricing plan). We do not recommend that you use any operating systems or software that are no longer supported by the developers (for example Microsoft Windows 98 or Microsoft Windows ME, Windows 2000), or to use unauthorized versions of SW.

c. It is recommended to set the antivirus software to the address of software developer and to update a list (basis) of known viruses. Then, it is necessary to set antivirus software for automatic scan of any information received and for update of antivirus basis via Internet. Update your antivirus basis at least every 1-3 days. If antivirus basis has not been updated for more than 1 week, antivirus efficiency is significantly decreased.

d. After successful setting of Internet connection, it is recommended to change the password you’ve received upon registration to another password of high complicity and to store it in a safe place. You can change your password via your Personal Account, the link to which is provided at www.jet3g.kz .
It is recommended to repeat this operation at least monthly.

3. Security on the Internet

à. How to avoid viruses spread by email

Most of existing computer viruses and other malware are spread via attachments, files that are sent with email messages. If a file attached to email contains a virus, this will often get launched when you open the file (normally upon double click of attachment sign). Irrespective of the email program and Windows version you use, some viruses can be avoided by following several basic rules.
When working with email attachments, irrespective of the type of program you use, follow the following recommendations:
  • Don’t open any attachment if you’re not sure whom you received it from or if you weren’t expecting it.
  • If you receive an email message with an attachment from a person you don’t know, delete it immediately.
  • Use antivirus program and update it regularly
  • If you send an email message with an attachment, let the receiver know it beforehand so that he wouldn’t think it’s a virus.
  • Use filters for protection against unsolicited mail in order to block any undesired messages; many of them contain malicious attachments.

b. How to avoid viruses spread via web pages

Most of the viruses, worms and Trojans spread via web pages take advantage of vulnerability of the most popular web browser Microsoft Internet Explorer (MSIE). The source of infection, as a rule, can be sites, especially those containing doubtful material, as well as some resources doubtful from the perspective of law and morality.

In order to avoid infecting your computer, follow the following rules:
  • Make sure your operating system and browser are regularly updated
  • Use antivirus program and update it regularly
  • Switch on pop-ups blocking in your browser settings
  • If possible, avoid doubtful sites.

We wish you a pleasant and secure work on the Internet!
